Programs established by first responders including local fire and police departments that encourage individuals with a substance use disorder to seek medical care and ongoing treatment.The programs may target individuals that seek out the service voluntarily for support, or as an alternative to arrest, prosecution and a possible prison term. Participating providers connect individuals asking for help with treatment programs and facilities, peer recovery specialists, and transportation to a treatment facility. At the community level, the programs may help distribute opioid blocking drugs to prevent and treat overdoses and provide resources to other departments wanting to implement this approach.
