Body Image Support Groups

Taxonomy Code: PN-8100.5000-100

Mutual support groups whose members are individuals who have difficulty with a negative perception of the aesthetics or attractiveness of their body and are seeking support to develop self-esteem, self-confidence, and body positivity/neutrality. Individuals may be experiencing body dissatisfaction due to pressure to conform to beauty standards and social comparisons, size discrimination issues, a genetic predisposition to anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder, or other issues causing self consciousness or shame. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; and provide emotional support, information and resources for those who participate. Groups may focus on size inclusivity and individual physical, economic, social, spiritual and emotional well-being rather than weight gain/loss and may offer shared resources emphasizing that all bodies deserve care, love and respect.
